Historical Romances inspired by Classic Literature
About
Hello! I'm Margaret, a Historical Romance writer and a professional historian.
My two passions feed each other, and whereas my profession puts me in contact with plenty of original sources that I can use to inspire my books, my novels allow me to express my creativity whilst still engaging with my love for History.

My journey as a writer began when I was 8 and borrowed my father's typewriter. There were tales about squirrels, at some point, and very interesting illustrations made on old MS Paint. Over the years, I have always been writing: my texts ended up in the school newspapers, national writing competitions, or the cards I made for relatives on special occasions. In my teens, I wrote plenty of short stories and chapters, but I did not take it seriously until I won my first writing competition, right after completing my PhD.

My writing style is deeply influenced by my love for 19th-century classics: I repeatedly re-read the works of Tolstoy and Victor Hugo, Alexandre Dumas and Jane Austen. I love psychological realism, which you find, particularly, in the first two. I am particularly Victorian when I write: I enjoy slower reads, where I can chew on each word, describe the world around my characters, their thoughts, and their feelings. Aside from these 19th-century fellows, I am a deep admirer of J. R. R. Tolkien, both as an academic and a novelist.

Aside from writing, I enjoy many creative pursuits: drawing and painting in watercolour, sculpting with air-drying clay, crocheting (poorly), and playing the piano at times. When I am out of the house, I like to enjoy long walks, especially if museums and monuments are involved. I'm a big fan of photography, and you can find a lot of my amateur photographic adventures on my social media.

Thank you for visiting my website. I hope, if you choose to adventure yourself in the world my characters frequent, you will enjoy their journey as much as I enjoy creating it. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to reach out. I look forward to connecting with fellow writers and readers alike.

Best regards,
M. J. Lloyd
